Gwendolen Avenue Was Named for Gwendolen Brown |
|
GWENDOLEN is the name given to the avenue that begins at 801 N. Hobart and extends westward to Price Road. The avenue was named for Gwendolen Frederica Brown, a younger sister of Montagu Kingsmill. Brown. She was born on 23 February 1884 at Hampstead, England (M. K. Brown Legacy,. page xi, item_10t). People who knew Mr. Brown remember that he was adamant about spelling the name of the avenue the same as the name of his sister. The Pampa City Directory shows Gwendolen Avenue on a map of the city, and there is a listing of addresses on Gwendolen Avenue, The SBC Directory for Pampa-Skellytown-Lefors shows Gwendolen as the address for those with telephones on that avenue. The Devotional Directory in The Pampa News on Fridays lists the Priest Park Church of God on 1123 Gwendolen (on the south side of the avenue.) The church has shows that the church building in at the corner of Gwendolen and Sumner. A large sign at the corner of the north side of Gwendolen and Nelson advertises the Gwendolen Plaza Apartments at 800 N. Nelson. The next Pampa city maps published by the Pampa Chamber of Commerce will show GWENDOLEN as the name of the avenue. It is hoped that the spelling of GWENDOLEN will be seen on city street signs and in articles that appear in The Pampa News.
